A Brief History of LESCO

Origins in WAPDA (1958-1982):

The electricity supply service in Pakistan was originally managed by various public and private sector agencies. To unify and coordinate the development of water and power resources, the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) was established in 1958 under the WAPDA Act.

Formation of the Lahore Area Electricity Board (1982):

By 1982, WAPDA operations were decentralized with the creation of eight Area Electricity Boards (AEBs), including the AEB Lahore. This restructuring aimed to provide greater autonomy and representation to provincial governments, elected officials, and key stakeholders like industrialists and agriculturalists.

The Birth of LESCO (1998):

To adapt to global changes in the power sector, such as the shift from monopolies to privatization, the Government of Pakistan introduced a Strategic Plan in 1994. This resulted in the unbundling of WAPDA’s power wing into 12 distinct companies responsible for generation, transmission, and distribution.

On March 22, 1998, the Lahore Area Electricity Board was reorganized into the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO), with a focus on commercialization and a long-term vision for privatization.
